Foundation Adopts Stream in Pearl Street Park

When an opportunity to volunteer through Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s Adopt-A-Stream program came along, Canopy Housing Foundation stepped up right away.

The chance to provide periodic clean-up of Pearl Street Park’s stream was a natural fit. “We immediately signed up to further demonstrate our commitment to the history of the Pearl Street Park and to highlight the significance of creating the Pearl Society,” said Terri Marshall, executive director of the Foundation.

Pearl Street Park is located on land that was once part of the Black community of Brooklyn, which was razed in the 1960s as part of federal urban renewal. In honor of the land’s historical significance, the Foundation named its major benefactor group the Pearl Society in 2019.

Furthermore, the Foundation’s office is located in the headquarters of its parent organization, Canopy Realtors® Association, whose building opens onto the park. In addition, Realtors® in Haywood County are revisiting their partnership with Haywood Waterways to undertake a similar environmental effort. “Hearing what was being done in Pearl Street Park inspired us to want to continue the work that we had undertaken several years ago,” said Lisa Brown, Canopy’s Western Region manager. “It just proves once again that Realtors® are committed to improving our community and do so in many ways.”

The Year Ahead

With Adopt-A-Stream, the Foundation’s core volunteers will join with the Association’s Leadership Academy, as well as its Young Professionals and Diversity and Inclusion Alliance groups, to perform stream clean-up at various times throughout 2022.
